Zahara Solomon brings her collegiate background of Art History (Kent State), over 20 years of Belly Dance experience as a student, instructor, troupe leader, costumer, and dealer of ethnic antiques from around the world. Vending Shiviti Bazaar along the West Coast and traveling around the world to purchase directly from artisans, as well as Consultant for dancers and antique dealers. Forever on a quest for ethical importing, wear, representation, and all issues around cultural appropriation, colonialism and racism. She will be sharing her knowledge as a white Jewish woman, with further resources to explore and learn about other sources to deepen knowledge and gain perspective. We will start off discussing cultural appropriation, exploring definitions and history. From that navigation, we will learn the origin sources of our usual Fusion costuming, symbology and traditional uses. And lastly, if students have one piece each of costuming that they would like identified, with information on further sources, we can explore deeper there.
